painter
David Ulrich is a multidisciplinary artist whose work reflects a lifelong interest in art and experimentation. Born in Illinois and raised in Idaho, he settled in Western Washington in the late 1980s. He studied art in high school and continued his studies at the University of Idaho, University of Washington and Cornish in Seattle before ultimately pursuing an education and career in engineering and chemistry.
Throughout the years, David continued creating art in a wide range of media, including pencil, pen and ink, stained glass, airbrush, oils and acrylics. His subject matter has been equally varied, encompassing landscapes, wildlife, science fiction, surrealism, classic cars and Pacific Northwest maritime scenes. Today, he works primarily in acrylic, with bright color and strong contrast providing a consistent thread throughout his work.
David’s more recent work also brings his love of pop art and classic comic book imagery to unexpected surfaces. He transforms thrifted furniture into one-of-a-kind functional artworks, refinishing and hand-painting each piece with imagery inspired by vintage comic books and nostalgic characters.
Whether working on canvas or giving a discarded piece of furniture an entirely new identity, David approaches his work with an eclectic mix of influences, bold imagery and a willingness to experiment.
