This November, Collective Visions Gallery featured artist Vanessa Fadeff presents Rainbows of the Forest, an exhibition inspired by her recent visit to Colombia and Costa Rica and her lifelong love of scarlet macaws.

Scarlet macaws, also referred to as “rainbows of the forest” because of their vibrant plumage, display rich reds, golden yellows and bright blues. Intelligent and sociable, these beautiful birds play an important role in their ecosystems, including distributing seeds throughout their Central and South American range.

A favorite of Vanessa's since childhood, seeing these birds in person was an unforgettable experience, “My heart sang when I heard their calls and the radiance of their colors took my breath away. I was blessed to visit these birds and learn about them, including the threats they are facing, and things we can do to help.”

During her travels, Vanessa learned more about the challenges scarlet macaws face, including predation, illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss.

One of the more fascinating aspects of their behavior is their consumption of clay, which helps protect them from toxins found in some of the fruits they eat. To reach these clay deposits, the birds must fly to exposed riverbanks, where they become vulnerable to birds of prey.

Scarlet macaws are also threatened by illegal wildlife trafficking. Although international trade is tightly regulated, poaching continues to threaten the species, driven by demand for exotic pets, food and their colorful feathers.

Habitat loss is another significant concern, as agricultural encroachment, climate change, industrial development, timber harvesting and expanding road networks continue to reduce their natural environment.

In honor of her experience, Vanessa will donate a percentage of the proceeds from this exhibition to rehabilitation programs and conservation efforts.

Vanessa's passion for wildlife and the natural world is reflected throughout her artwork. Working primarily in oils and gouache, she brings the beauty of her subjects to life through rich color, careful observation and attention to detail. Her paintings reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the creatures that inhabit it.

Rainbows of the Forest invites visitors to share in Vanessa's admiration for these extraordinary birds while learning more about the importance of protecting them for future generations. Opening night, Bremerton First Friday Art Walk, November 6th, 5:00 - 8:00 PM.
