For September, Collective Visions Gallery featured artist Jaime Thornton dives beneath the surface with Wild, Vibrant and Diverse: Surfacing the Deep, a vibrant exploration of the ocean and the experiences that have shaped her connection to it.
The ocean has long been a source of both inspiration and adventure for Jaime. She finds creative energy in the colors revealed along the beach as the tide recedes, the wind catching the sails of a boat, the rush of water beneath a surfboard, and the vivid marine life encountered while scuba diving. Those experiences emerge in work filled with movement, saturated color and an unmistakable sense of energy.
Jaime began painting at the age of eight, developing an early understanding of color and composition while learning to trust intuition as part of the creative process. Today, she works across a variety of media, using brilliant pigments and expressive forms to capture the movement, light and energy she sees in the natural world. Her love of kayaking, sailing, surfing and scuba diving continues to inform her artistic journey.
In Surfacing the Deep, that relationship with the water takes center stage. Works range from the rolling currents of 11:11 and the underwater world of Pushing the Light to more figurative pieces such as Search the Selkie – Self Portrait and She Woman Sea Woman. In Finding Balance in the Storm, a powerful breaking wave fills the canvas, capturing both the beauty and force that run throughout the collection.
The exhibition also reflects something deeper than Jaime’s fascination with the ocean: her commitment to protecting it. Ocean conservation is an important part of her work and values, and she donates a portion of her art sales to ocean conservation efforts.
Wild, Vibrant and Diverse: Surfacing the Deep will be featured at Collective Visions Gallery throughout September.
